Spanish Napoleonics - Phase 2 Complete

You know I like to talk about the phases of my 28mm Nappy project.

Well I am excited to report that I am complete with my Phase II portion of my Spanish Nappy Project.

Phase I was 3 Infantry Units and a couple of cannons. Well 2 weeks ago I finished the last unit in Phase II. The last Line Infantry Musketeer unit. So for the forseeable future, I am complete with a spanish Army that has a good core of Infantry and a couple of Cannon and a Dragoon Unit. Good enough for a full command in Black Powder or to be parceled out to the rest of the British Army to bolster the ranks.

I have not completed bases yet. I will do that once the Baron paints me a couple of Generals for the Spanish. I convinced(blackmailed) him that he could have the Giants in my Bones order if he would paint me a couple of mounted generals for my Spanish. They are cleaned and primed, I just need to get them to him.

Here's some pics:

4 Musketeer Units, 1 Militia Unit, 1 Converged Grenadier Unit, 1 Dragoon Unit, and 2 Cannon.

I have figs for another Musketeer Unit and Militia Unit as well as 3 Cannons and a Dragoon Unit. So that is Phase 3. Who knows when I will get to that. But for now, I will enjoy that my Phase II projects for the British and Spanish are done.

I have fallen in love with the old Victrix metal/now Bridgae Games Portuguese that Paul Hicks sculpted. I think they will be my next Nappy Purchase when I am ready. But til then I have boxes of French that may actually see the light of the painting table. Because they are woefully understaffed at the moment. Looks like fall and winter may be the winter of the Tricolor! and basing. goddamn basing. I only have 160 stands to do right now for the Allied Army. And I still need to add Flags to each unit.

Taking a break from historicals for the moment.

I have been painting 28mm SF for the last 2 weeks when i can steal some time. Pics to come on Monday. I have had a nice sized Pig Iron Heavy Infantry army languishing in primer for a very long time. As well as a bunch of Kolony and Rebel minis and extra heads. So I cranked out a nice big squad of them and some support weapons and command. I have a couple more leg units to do and a nice collection of Wardroids (I love their wardroids and their accessory packs make them even better) to work on this weekend. simple 3 layer paint jobs. Been a lot of fun. Bright and spacey!

Happy painting

Painting Distractions and other nonsense

I ave been very busy as of late with life and so this little corner of the blogosphere has been quiet for me. And its been pretty quiet in the workshop of doom as well.

Since the Bones have arrived I have painted exactly  - ZERO. I finally got so Fusion paint so I can prime them black. Its my painting style so I really don't want to go back to the days of a white primer and painting out all the white. I hated that period in my painting. Anyway I'll get a few primed as a test and see what happens. Once I start I will be painting monsters only really.

I did base paint about 30 Mechwarrior Clix figures. Fleshing out units for my initial Mechwarrior forces. We may pick up the new quick play Alpha Strike rules and actually play Mechwarrior, or we may just continue to use them for whatever we decide to play. Either way, they are a nice distraction.

As I was contemplating 15mm Sci FI, Fantasy or Post Apoc to paint next in the 3 hours I had to paint last night, I pulled the trigger on one of theose units that had been vexing me for several years - The 42nd Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) for the Pennisula. My British Nappies are waiting on 2 infantry units to be finished so I said, what the hell. I got faces, jackets, and kilts all base painted. Hopefiully tonite I can steal an hour and finish highlighting jackets, doing boots and gaiters and getting prepped for belts and lace. I should have about a week of off and on painting to fnish them, but, they were fun. The 92nd Gordon's Highlanders are next and I should have 12 infantry Units finished and the Brit infantry is finally complete. No promises after that, but a few more guns await, as well as 3 more cav units. And you can't have the Penninsula without the KGL. I still have 3 Spanish Infantry units, a couple of cannons, and a cav unit to finish them off.

Then come the French. they wait patiently and are understandably perturbed about being bumpe once again, this time by giants in dresses. They shoud be encouraged though, because a new line of metal Vitula Legion has been released. Scultoed by Paul Hicks these beauties are as vital to the French cause in the Penninsula as the KGL were to the Brits. So once on the market I will gobble these up for a whole division I should think.

The RECRUITS Con announced that they were close to closing the PEL for games at this Falls event. Seems a bit early for a regional gaming con in mid-september. But you all know my love for the Con. I am sure I will run a game. But with Football practice and season starting, I'm gonna be mightily distracted.

Keep rolling sixes

Quick Update - I'm a victim of my own pics - 6-24-13

So I posted those pics of the Spanish and I thought, man I'm really not in too bad of  shape with the French. I have 5 Infantry Units and 2 Cannon. That's a big Division. Just need two more for a game. So I started pulling fig boxes out and on sunday evening, I got 3 cav units (Cuirassier, Dragoon, and Chasseur) cleaned and built and mounted on paint sticks, and got 8 cannons and crew cleaned and prepped for building, and started building infantry units. I have 2 Inf antry units on sticks, and a bunch more to sort.

Not using HaT 1/72 minis, but this pic painting is spectacular

So I think I may be painting some french cannon and cav to go with the infantry I have completed. Put, I think I will be painting a unit of Infantry first to bring me up to 6 Infantry Units.

Based on the Barons comments, if I can get a couple of infantry units, the three cav units and a couple of Cannon, we could do Joseph's Kingdom of Spain Allied with French versus British.

It would line out like this I think.

Joseph I Spanish:
3 Line Infantry
1 Militia Infantry
1 Converged Grenadier Infantry
2 Foot Cannon
1 Dragoon

French:
4 Line Infantry
2 Legere Infantry
4 Foot Cannon
1 Curiassier
1 Dragoon
1 Chasseur

Versus

British:
6 Line Infantry
4 Light Infantry
4 Foot Cannon
2 Horse Cannon
1 Dragoon
1 Hussar
1 Lt. Dragoon

That would be 19 British units Vs 21 French allied Units. Based upon quality would probably be a good game. BRits would be 3-4 Divisions, French 3-4 Divisions.

At full build out, The Allied British/Spanish Army includes 9 more British Units (3 Cav, 2 Highland, 1 KGL Inf, 3 Cannon), and 5 more Spanish Units(1 Cav, 1 Inf, 1Militia, 2 Cannon), and the French is a total of 18 Infantry 10 Cannon, and 6 Cav.

Lots to go. About 1/2 way there.

My original Army Workup for the French. It has expanded by 50%.
And just a little insight. I have never painted 1 French Napoleonic Uniform. I have never been on the French side of the lottery when picking armies for painting Nappies. I always got someone else. I have Painted the Brits a couple of times now and truly love that army. But I have never gotten the chance to paint them. So I am looking forward to getting to know the uniform and how to paint it. I also have never had the chance to paint the French Cav, so that should be a real treat. Can you imagine, a Nappy enthusiast never painting a Cuirassier uniform? Or an Old Guardsman?

Thank you Angus, I get to stare at your beautiful work as reference.

Maybe its time to start.

Pics when there is progress.

Happy Brushing!

Spanish Napoleonics - Pics

Well finally, some pics for you kind readers.Been a while.

Quick set up of Spanish village buildings a too-blue background and poor lighting and you have a patented Lead Addict photoshoot!

Spanish division where it stands now. 1 Dragoon Unit, 2 Foot Cannon, 1 Provincial Militia Unit, and 3 Infantry Units. All Front Rank. I have another Dragoon unit on paint sticks, another infantry unit, 2 stands of grenadiers for a converged gren unit, 2 cannon, command, casualty counters and another militia unit to wrap it up. I also have the guerillas as well, but they will be mounted on singles for skirmishing. Need to do bases and flags, but this is a nice start for a Spanish Division to bolster the British Army for Black Powder.

Yeah for Black Bowder! - Albion Triumphant

Warlord has released their Black Powder army book for the Pennisula - Albion Triumphant!

They are including that dashing Guards Color Guard figure if you order from Warlord. At $29.00 for the whole Pennisula Campaign, it's well worth it for me to get, obviously. and since I have my Brits done, and my Spanish in the home stretch and my French in the blocks, it couldn't come at a better time. Huzzah!

28mm Spanish Napoleonics for Black Powder - Irlander Unit

Here is the completed Irlander Unit for my Spanish Army for Black Powder.

I am doing the Spanish Units at 20 figs, instead of the 24 for my normal units. But I may go back and do the extra stand. Not sure.

Banners and Basing when I am done with the Army. I will do them at the same time with the British.

Regiment Zargossa(Green Facings) is next, Then the last unit will be Cordoba (Red Facings), and two extra grenadier stands from Regiment Princesa(Black facings, light blue jacket, red piping) for a converged grenadier unit, when you take all the grenadier stands from the other units.

I have a nice large militia unit to do after the regular infantry. So that's 4 line, 1 converged grenadier, and 1 militia unit. That's 1 big division, or two small ones for Black Powder. Add a couple of cannon and cav units and I am all set.

Thanks for looking.

Spanish Napoleonics - First Line Unit complete

OK, So I know the photos are gonna be crap cause i took them quickly with my iPhone, but here they are, quick shots of the first completed unit: Regiment El Rey

Here's a few of the sticks that are ready as well. Artillery in the back, And the light blue is the start of Regiment Irlander(baby blue with yellow facings and lapels, beautiful). Theya re like the Classic San Diego Chargers of Nappies. In front is one of the Grendier sticks. Those two stands will probably be a red faced unit, for Cordoba or Guadalajara and so will be converged grenadier command stand, then a green faced stand, and a black faced stand.

Overall, these are a dream to paint. they were clearly made with a painter in mind, and they finish very nicely. Bravo Front Rank.

Fistful of Lead: Wasteland Warriors

Hey gang. with all the Post Apoc goodness on here of late, I wanted to let you in on what I have mentioned before.

The Baron wrote a supremely fun set of skirmish/gang Old West game called Fistful of Lead. Its simple and fun. It has lots of flavor, plays to a conclusion, and is amazing fun, and can play with 8 or even 12 people at a time. Go buy it. Its cheap. $6.00. It has a great system behind it that can be used for many genres.

Which brings me to Fistful of Lead: Wasteland Warriors. While I dont feel as strongly about Wild West gaming as the Baron does, I have always loved that FoL seemed infinitely customizable because the system was rock solid underneath. So as you can see on the Lead Addict blog, I love Post Apoc gaming. So what could be closer to the dusty anything goes environment of the fictional Wild West than the shanties and wastelands of the PA? Thus was born FoL:WW. A few questions have been asked on the yahoo group : fistfuloflead@yahoogroups.com. So I thought I would cast a wider net and fill everyone in.

FoL:Wasteland Warriors is my and the Baron's take on the Post Apoc. Its equal parts The Road (what could be more soul crushing and thought provoking for a father), the Book of Eli (old people cannibals and blind ass kickers, I'll have some), Fallout 3(just play it), and Gamma World (its like a warm blanket on a cold winter night). Its not self serious, but you can play it gritty, or you can play it Wazoooo! and Gonzo. and the sweet spot is somewhere in between. We are using all of the foundational mechanics of FoL, but are adding a bunch of weapons(automatics and heavy weapons, to experimental and high-tech), mutations and Mutants, Robots, and all of the fun you want for a small gang skirmish game in the PA. We are also refining the rules for FoL:WW based on umpteen playtests of the Wild West Game and Wasteland Warriors. These are the Basic Rules. And they represent what the current Fistful of Lead rules are now. Simple, fun, short and sweet. And you can play only those rules and have a great time. They are a complete set of rules. And it doesn't matter if you play them at 6mm, 15mm, or 28mm. So for all you nuts out there playing 6mm single mounted skirmish, you can. My collection is 28mm. But I am starting on my 15mm collection next thanks to the great figs by Khurusan.

I also wanted to add some of the funner Roleplaying aspects the Baron and I fondly remeber from our Gamma World days. So we are adding a whole second section of Advanced rules that includes Full Random Gang Generation System, Random Mutation Charts, Vehicle Rules, Random Equipment, Loot and Weapon Charts, A Bestiary, Random Events and Encounter Charts, Scenarios, and Campaign Rules. Its a major expansion to an already great game.

Mr Roper. Slum Lord and Arms Dealer.

So where are we with all this? How close to publishing? Well the Basic Rules were 1 playtest away from being completed. So they are done and ready. We need to format and do the art. But that is doable pretty quick if we will just do it. Think D&D Basic two column format with integral art work. The Advanced rules are about half done. Mainly just need to get them all on the same sheet of paper.

I would hope that we would have a draft ready to be finalized by Spring Recruits. We'll see. Life has a way of getting in the way of our fun. We have not decided on a price yet, but we want to keep it reasonable. We are just some guys who game a lot and this is just an extra thing. We aren't trying to sell minis. For us, a good set of rules is worth its weight in gold, but we also want it to be accessible. So affordable is key. I'll keep you guys updated as we go.

After this I will probably do a campaign sandbox book. I can't seem to get those GM genes out of me so my campaign world and all of its factions will show up as a sandbox campaign for those of you who like that sort of thing. Nothing is funner than secret alliances and double crosses in a mini game. I don't want to bog down the rules with that stuff though. I never liked that in rule books. And as a sandbox, it will have to have some more random encounter, loot and bestiary charts and maps.

After that, well I think we have to take FoL to the stars. We will have worked out most of the high tech weaponry by then. The Baron is heading the other dierction and is working on a Horse and Musket version, and then hopefully a Dark Ages version. If only we could win the lottery so we could write wargame rules, pay sculptors and artists and have a game company.

Stay tuned folks. Updates in between trying to get French done for Black Powder, A new huge Undead army for 15mm Hail Caesar!, and other fun stuff.

So what next?... Spanish Of course - 28mm Penninsular Spanish

What to do next, well, i was going to do those last couple of cannon for the British, but I flipped the page in one of my uniform books and there was the Spanish Artillery. So I did some research, and these amazing illos and minis turned up, so I was jazzed to get started on my own. (all images from the web)

Love these illos

Beautiful Illo

From the excellent Touching History gent. I was lucky to pick up his book on making terrain for the Penninsular Campaigns. This is is one of his setups at Partizan I believe.
So I got all of my Spanish down, got faces and hands based painted and inked, then decided to do what I never do. I did a test fig. I was trying to work out how I wanted to do teh white uniform, and I just went from there. All told about 30 minutes trying to figure out the uniform in my mind and what everything is on the sculpt. These are Front Rank and they are a joy to paint. Clean and crisp. A real painters figure.

Well here he is, the first Spanish Regiment which could be either Rey, Reina, or Corona:

Finished...15th King's Own

Here's some pics of the completed 15th Hussars (King's Own) unit to help flesh out my cavalry division for the British Penninsular Army. They give me a great deal of closure. I have a couple of arty units I am going to do, but this allows me to feel like I can finally finish all the bases at one time, at least for this phase of the Brits. I must say, they are one beautiful looking army.

I took a couple better pics of the 16th Lt Dragoons as well.
